1. Meeting(s) – No Meeting in August. September 4 – Walter’s Famous Low Country Boil at New Day Ranch. Only $12.00 since we do the cooking ourselves. Feel free to come early to help set-up, shuck corn, clean potatoes, set up raffle tables etc. We will be joined again this year by the Kentucky Falconers who put on an interesting program last year. The October meeting will be back indoors at the Lion’s Club in Florence.
2. Fishing Derbies. Derbies are still underway but winding down. Look for notices for the Rotary Club of Covington & Boone County Derby on August 9, and the 5th District Youth Fest on September 27. Susan Brown of Boone County Conservation District sent the note below to thank Joel and his team for the fly-fishing segment of the Youth LEAF program. We plan to take her up on her invitation to have a fishing event on Gunpowder.
Please extend our great appreciation for Joel and the rest of his excellent team of volunteers (I don’t’ have email addresses for everyone) who helped us with two sessions of LEAF Academy this year! We had a total of 22 teens participate in the program this year, and as always, the fly fishing day is their favorite!
I have shared the Club’s information with the students and parents, so I’m sure you’ll see some of them again. I also spoke with Joel about setting up some fly tying classes in the off season.
Here is a link to a google drive with pictures from both sessions: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1jt6cC6EQJSvWe6m5ZzzUT9kdXBvvuxxs?usp=drive_link
We would love to host NKFF again at the property for a day of fishing and fun – let’s set it up!

3. CPR/First Aid Class. Joe Cruse and Pete Stark will again be offering CPR and with First Aid classes added. This is knowledge that can come into play at any time. Look for emails requesting an expression of interest. Classes will be scheduled after everyone has had a chance to let Joe and Pete know of their interest.
4. Fishing Trips. Cumberland River Campout, July 21-24. Mark LeSuer and his wife, Lisa, their friends Gary and Sherry, Randy Arrowood, Dave & Peter DeVita all camped out at the Kendall Campground Annex near Wolf Creek Fish Hatchery. The Annex area is nicely maintained with large campsites and a nearby bathhouse. And inexpensive. It’s an easy walk to lower Hatchery Creek. The Creek itself can be a bit difficult to access in spots due to vegetation growth. Randy and Peter caught some fish in Hatchery Creek, both using Tenkara Rods. Many fish were caught in the Cumberland itself. The generators were off from midnight until 10:00 a.m. so there was very good fishing at Helm’s Landing until after 11:00 a.m. They stock enough fish that you can be lulled into thinking you’re really good at this sport! The morning mist on the water was striking.
