Big Oaks Wildlife Refuge


Float trip Old Timbers Lake, Big Oaks Wildlife Refuge, near Madison, Indiana. A 165 acre lake, built back in the 40”s in The Jefferson Proving Grounds. This is a float trip only, electric trolling motors are allowed, fish for Bass, Blue Gills, Crappy and catfish, the lake ranges from 2-40 ft deep, A Indiana fishing license and personal flotation device is required. also everyone must receive a one time 20 minute safety brief from the DNR, before entering the Proving Grounds. Ron Francis will coordinate this trip and will provide further information on the trip events page.

  1. I have been informed by the DNR ,that the lake will be closed on the 27th, so we need to move the trip date to either Friday 26th, Sunday 28th or Monday 29th. I’m open to any of those days. Give me your preference, so I can reschedule the date.

  2. The trip is now rescheduled for Friday April 26
    Everyone needs to be at the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge Admin bldg (DNR) at 7am to check in and receive a 20 minute safety brief.

    I will be fishing the lake on the 19th or 22nd and provide a fishing report

  3. The DNR charges $3 per person per day , Unless you have a VA disability, bring your military or other public servant ID with you. Each disabled sponsor can take 3 guest at no charge.

    Fishing lures : think surface weedless and noisy for lures/ flies. Bring a backup spinning or bait casting rod with white/ chartreuse spinnerbaits w/ large Colorado blades, buzz baits, weedless frogs ( like terminator poppin frog) or rubber floating paddle leg frogs, subsurface 4-5 inch flukes with paddle tail rigged weedless blue, black, green colors , lizards or rubber worms rigged Texas style. these fish will be starting to move into the shallows for pre spawn

    Also bring a camera for club pictures, drinks/ food for your lunch
